To Kill a Mockingbird

Design

The idea for the cover is to represent the central conflict within the story and subsequently all of literature, the conflict between good and bad. Within the book, after one of the characters is gifted a bb gun, his father states that to kill a mockingbird is a sin since they do nothing wrong. With this central theme, the mocking bird on the cover is used to represent good, and the bb gun is used to represent bad. The two items on the cover are conflicting with one another as both try to be the primary force in the world, as we're shown a good deal of injustice within the novel.
